Medellin

Medellin is a 3rd class municipality in the province of Cebu and one of the towns that composed the 4th Congressional district. It is located in the northernmost portion of the island, approximately 116 kilometers away from Cebu City.

The town is second to the northernmost town of the island. On its north is the municipality of Daanbantayan, on the south are the municipality of San Remegio and the City of Bogo. The Camotes Sea can be found on the east while the Tañon strait on the west.

The town has 7,382.33 hectares of land area and it is subdivided into 19 smaller units. These barangays are namely: Antipolo, Curva, Daanlungsod, Dalingding Sur, Dayhagon, Gibitngil, Canhabagat, Caputatan Norte, Caputatan Sur, Kawit, Lamintak Norte, Luy-a, Panugnawan, Poblacion, Tindog, Don Virgilio Gonzales, Lamintak Sur, Maharuhay and Mahawak.

The topographic profile of the town is generally flats which covers 85.6% of the total land area. Moderately sloping terrain comprises the 12.9% of the total land area and the remaining 1.5% is classified as steep relief.

The climate falls on the fourth type which is characterized by no pronounced maximum rain period and no definite dry season.

Townsfolk depend on farming and fishing for a living but the main income provider for the town is the sugar plantation and milling. Aside from sugarcanes, coco products and corn are also available in the place. Some are also doing mat weaving.

History:

Three barangays namely: Kawit, Buenavista and Tindog were once part of Daanbantayan. Thanks to the virtue of a royal decree by Queen Isabel of Spain, these three barrios were separated from its mother municipality sometime in December 1881.

The three barrios were coalesced and formed into one independent unit named “Medellin”. The name was copied from a place in Colombia, South America after the similarities in its topographic features were detected.

The town is a dream place to retire as it exudes everyday living a vacation. Its lush vegetation, the refreshing sea breeze, the romantic sunrises and sunsets and a peaceful community are enough reasons for those who want to settle and call it home. Besides, it is far from the hustles and bustles of the city.

Amidst the scenic valleys of sugarcane plantation in the place, there are theme parks, golf clubs like the Mercedes Plantation Golf & Country Club and other joyous treats for local and foreign tourists.

It also boasts of breathtaking beaches in clear azure waters and teeming marine ecosystem, especially in Gibitngil Island where one can do snorkeling and scuba diving and marvel at nature’s underwater bounty. In the mainland, there are also beaches in white sand, same clear waters and cheap prices like the Bantayan Beach, Kawit Beach and Daanlungsod-Mahawak Beach.

How To Get There:

From Cebu North Terminal in Cebu City, many public vehicles such as busses and V-hires convey passengers to Medellin. Travel time may consume 2-3 hours drive from the main city.
