Cebu is one healthy abode of many interesting traditions and cultures. As a recipient of many practices from foreigners such as the Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Americans many years ago, their beliefs and customs have been strongly put to practice. Even though dominated by the so called “Catholic Christians”, there are still tidbits of several traditions or religions being preserved which is quite interesting to know and discover.
One best example is the must-see Cebu attraction- the Taoist Temple. The temple is the contribution of the Chinese community which comprises the 15 percent of the total Cebu population.
The temple preserved the teachings of the Lao Tze, a Chinese philosopher way back 600 years B.C. The temple is the hub for Taoism worshippers. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, they would climb the 99 steps just to light joss sticks, a sort of candle for them and had their fortunes be read. The steps represent the chapters of the Taoism scriptures. Other rituals are washing of hands, walking on barefoot upon entering the temple and praying to gods for the answers of their wishes. After casting two small blocks of woods, if the two blocks are facing up, it’s time for one to make a wish. If not, come back some time after, it is not time to grant you wish.
Located in the wealthy residential yet mountainous suburb in Beverly Hills, it is just 6 kilometers north from Cebu City. Built by the wealthy Chinese community in Cebu on 1972, Taoist Temple is very spectacular with its flamboyant style of Chinese architecture. It is highly decorative, color-studded and has a pagoda-styled roof.
The temple offers an astounding view from the outside but the inside has more breathtaking sights. The towering temple can be approached through the three separate winding routes.
Within its premises, the temple offers many attractions and exciting views. A smaller version of the world’s famous Great Wall of China can be found there. You can roam around, run, jump, take pictures (but no shouting or else the monks will reprimand you) and feel the experience being at the top of the Great Wall. Well, if you have not experienced walking in the real Great Wall, this one satisfies your curiosity.
Another attraction that will surely catch the eyes of the tourists is the giant dragon statue and other colorful dragons found all over the place. Dragon is a mythical creature symbolizes by colorful, scaly, fire-breathing monster with wings, long tail and claws. It is present in every Chinese tradition especially in its New Year.
One would be very much enjoyed and impressed at the same time while touring the entire temple. There is chapel, a mini library with various types of books, instructional materials and interesting manuscripts, many souvenir shops and of course, a wishing well. Spacious balconies are also noted with painting all over.
Situated in the top of the hill, the temple has been elevated 300 meters from the sea level. The location added the beauty of the temple from afar. After climbing the 99 steps, you will be rewarded by its most remarkable view of the entire Cebu City. Aside from that, a good view also of the Mactan Island and Bohol. At twilight, you will be stunned by its splendid view of the sunset.
If without visitors, it is a good place to reflect and indulge the beauty of nature. It has beautifully-made and well-kept gardens for visitors. The good thing, it is opened for everybody; worshipers or tourists alike, unlike the neighboring Phu Sian Temple.
Taoist Temple had become a palace for oblation, an altar for praying and offering, a place of worship for the Taoism devotees and an attraction for the tourists. Every single child who grew up in Cebu had visited Taoist Temple during one of their field trips. It is perfect for educational tours, for you will surely learned a lot of amazing facts.
A complete Cebu tour must include the quick peek of the magnificent Taoist Temple.

Taxis, vans and motorcycles are available. It is only a six-kilometer ride and takes only few minutes to arrive at the door of the temple.
